siai47, thanks for the photos (hope you can figure out a high-resolution option) and the well-informed discussion. Agree that the actual current shunting may well be autonomous. Perhaps all this OT battery-management stuff can be carried onto another thread? This battery pack removal is such a great reference for the future.
 
I have some questions:
1) Do all i-Miev clones mount same battery?
2) Which is the declared range for i0n? I can't find it in the user manual you linked (Italian version)
3) Does bottom balancing starts when the battery is low in SoC and not in use?
4) Who knows about "model M" with 10 kWh battery? Any official manual? I read it costs now $19.000 including battery!

About the 14.5 vs 16 kWh, it's a news from 2012 or beginning of 2013: the car should have same range with smaller battery (and smaller price) thanks to some technical improvements.
