There are conflicting reports of whether a second hand charger from a wrecked car will work.
Ours has been 4 months at a dealer in Australia too, but at least they are saying they will fix it for free....eventually.

Boscoe, since it's a lot of material to wade through, I'll add here that I replaced my failed charger with one from a wreck. Less than $400 and a couple hours of labor. Operates like new without any issues.

I suspect you would be saying the same thing had you bought an ICE which was outside the factory warranty and had a transmission go out on it. Whenever you buy something really cheaply with no warranty, you're taking a chance. Luckily, your charger can probably be fixed for about the same as an automatic transmission or less

thanks jray3, yeah I've read through a lot of that but that level of expertise is beyond my pay grade. I mean I can turn a wrench but, that dealer has already changed out the charger and I think they're currently chasing codes. So frustrating, no rust, big parts seem fine, hard to think about scraping or parting out!

What model year is your car?

I just replaced my charger in a 2012. cost me $900 Canadian. It was easy with the help I received on this forum. Would take me less than an hour to do it again.

Thanks for all the support and knowledge over the years but for now It's in the hands of the dealer.

Just an update...Holy crap I got my IMIEV back ! 7 months at dealer and they finally fixed it (fingers crossed) .They changed on board charger, 10 and 20 amp fuses, charging port...$6300! Seems to drive OK, I get an intermittent exclamation light tho, it comes on for about 5 seconds at a time and goes out(??). I was worried about traction battery degradation for going so long without charging but, the range seems to be just as good as when I took car to dealer.

boscoe, glad to see you have your car back and that it's running. I love my i-MiEV, but I don't think I would have sprung for that amount to have it fixed. You need to go on record with them that you still intermittently get that exclamation light, as they owe you, big time, a perfectly operating vehicle!

I'm disappointed that we, as consumers, have no recourse in situations such as this...

Hey Joe, yeah $6300 is way more than i thought i'd ever spend but, to replace that car would be 30 to 40 grand. And I get to park at my work place free, saves $18 a day. I thought, when I bought it, what could ever go wrong on an electric car? Now I know.

Howdy boscoe,

1. There shouldn't be any HV warning lights coming on (car w/ !)--they need to get to the bottom of this and fix it right.

2. If you had to pay for a new charrger, then the old one is yours also. Get it from them and we will fix it for you, then you can sell it to help pay off the outrageous expense.

Hey Kiev, yeah I'll let them know about the ( ! ) . and getting the charger is a good idea. I forgot to ask them for it when I got car. They changed it straight away in october or november tho, i wonder if they still have it or could find it.

What? No. It's $5K-$10K for a used i-MiEV on cars.com (but you might have to ship it), with one outlier at $15K. Or you might be able to get a used Leaf in the same range locally (there are 1147 of them on cars.com right now, vs. 21 i-MiEVs).

Used...nope
:?:

I don't understand - do you mean you don't even consider used BEVs? In my case, the two used i-MiEVs and Tesla S85 were chosen not only for their low price but also because any lingering bugs had already surfaced and been taken care of by the previous owner.
