This will help if the remote is the one programmed to your car.
If it's not, you need to program them to operate together.
There is a posting here some where on how to do that.

The remote is covered in the main i-MiEV manual. (If you don't have that, just google "i-miev manual".) I don't think there's any other documentation for it.

Found some secret function. Hold MODE while clicking left or right to mute-unmute remote.

Also "unknown" reason why ERROR would appear: Door is not latched (fully closed).
If door is not latched, car will not preheat (aka door open, heat gets out).
