    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

Thanks, Good catch! My chassis limit is idealist, ignoring body lean, tire and suspension effects... But it still shows that the US i-MiEV should be able to do up to 0.16g better then the 'i' which managed 0.74g. I wanted to be sure the handling improovements some of us seek are possible...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

CORRECTION, 0.98g ! The 'i' did a 0.74g on the skid pad, and I calculated the chassis flips at 0.84. The japan/eu i-Miev did a 0.73g on the skid pad, and I calculated the chassis flips at 0.92. Better chassis capability than the 'i' due to extra battery weight down low. But maybe the extra...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

I have not had time to try my Mini R81's yet, but I am getting some tires to test fit... Today while getting my lightweight bike hitch receiver welded (more later on the right thread...), I saw a 2003 Honda Insight EV and talked to the owner. I was able to measure the inside of the 14x5.5 inch...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

I just got a near perfect condition silver mini 15x5.5 R81's imola wheels with bald 175/65R15's good to test fit with shims. Looking inside with tire they look ok to narrow 15mm if needed, but with tire off I will ask the experts at a place nearby that specializes in wheel width changes. In a...

    Lost regen with new tires

On radial tires, air pressure has a very small effect. There are so many combinations that I prefer to share my excel file with the calculations. It also has a lot of other useful stuff including range calculations. http://files.fm/g/woponqe#aa/9624Mpg_mph_imiev.xlsx

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

BTW from the lost regen thread I confirmed that 3.1% change in diameter is too much. But 2.4% should be ok unless I missed someone reporting worn front's causing the same problem. Diameter (inches) front rear %rear/front %change 21.9 23.3 6.39% 2.37% worn front 22.4...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

Good find on recoding, for me that's a last resort. I want to first try AA traction 155/60R15 front's on a big open area to see if it over steers wickedly, wet or dry. Apparently the mini's use these LUG BOLTS: http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-610-367-1-M12-1-5-29-5mm-Wheel/dp/B0049DYDMK They...

    Lost regen with new tires

Thanks! I guessed that after reading all your posts again and assuming you tried to find OEM sizes but the correct rears where not in stock. So this confirms that a 0.9% difference in rear/front diameter is out of range. BTW if you combined the 175/55 rears with half worn 145/65 fronts it...

    Lost regen with new tires

PV1, Please specify what size combination of front and rear causes regen to be lost. The posts are not clear on that. Those of us considering upgrading the front's need to know how much front to rear wheel % diameter mismatch does not affect regen. New the difference is 4%. If the engineers...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

I just ordered (2) 5mm and (2) 8mm hubcentric 56.1 4x100 wheel spacers to take to the local yard and try the R81's myself next week. Just for clearance testing purposes I can double them to get up to 16mm.

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

Scrub radius is not an issue as I mentioned before. I still don't see why you gave up without trying 10 or 15mm spacers. Assuming this is the plan, lot's of good tire choices: FRONT: 165/60R15 = 22.8x???R15 D+1.79% REAR: 185/60R15 = 23.7x7.3R15 D+1.70% So I ran this tool to see the...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

The experiment is not failed, it's not finished! Scrub radius is defined from the tire centerline to the pivot axis. Offset is defined as the distance to the wheel centerline. Therefor, the scrub radius is not changed if the new wheels offset and diameter is the same. The Mini wheels have a...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

I looked around more on a really good wheel database and found some better options... 15x5-1/2 from Nissan 200SX or Mini 7 hole imola R81 are common at salvage yards. The R81 is only 12 lbs which compensates for having to use wheel spacers. All the other types of mini wheels are heavier...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

I stopped by the dealer and looked at a Mirage alloy 14x4.5 wheel and they look super close to or maybe slightly less than 12 inch inner diameter. They may fit but it will be very close. EDIT: I took a picture with a tape measure and looked closely with irfanview. THEY WILL NOT CLEAR THE...

    Let the Hacking Begin

The problem here is make sure you don't overload the tongue, which will lift the front wheels. Take a front seat passenger to help balance. I'm qualified to design this lighter version. What I had in mind will take the torque. The limiting thing on torque is a 1-1/4 or 2 inch receiver breaking.

    Let the Hacking Begin

I don't see the point in having such a heavy hitch for carrying bikes. I looked under the bumper and it's 100% clear to me that I can make something for $60-100 parts and labor that should weigh less than 15 lbs. It should be strong enough to tow a light trailer (600 lbs?). This and a 1/4"...

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

The only possible deal breaker with Mirage wheels is the inner diameter being smaller than the front brake caliper. I'm thinking of going to a dealer and measuring it.

    Wheels, Rims, and Tires

Regarding 2014+ 14x4.5 alloy mirage wheels: I estimated dimensions from pictures. Estimated 12" Inner diameter maybe just big enough to clear i-MiEV front brake caliper. On my alloy fronts there is about 1/2" to 5/8" clearance to the caliper, so 1" smaller wheel might just fit. Try here for...
