Hi guys,

I came across this inexpensive 200v EVSE charger. What do you think of it from looking at the sales page info?

Says it works on the Nissan Leaf as well. Which I also have.

Better options out there?

My 2011 i-miev charging cable is just a bare cable. No box in the middle with status lights like my Leaf charging cable. Do you know if they're interchangeable? Or if the i-miev can at least use a Leaf cable with the status box?

I'm thinking of getting this Joy All so I can mount it in an exterior IP67 rated box to make it easier for my wife to charge both cars.

This is the EV outlet on our house: I need to look up the actual NEMA outlet type/number.
Panasonic model number on it is wk4322s.

Not sure but i think the 2011 uses the plain EVSE cable with no control box. The resistors for comm with the OBC are embedded in the handle, along with a temperature sensor.

Hopefully someone with an early model will chime in about using a full-blown EVSE.

@alviseven had a 2011 I-Miev that wouldn’t charge on a ‘granny lead’, he then took the OBC out of a 2010 non-runner and eventually managed to get it working but with the ‘straight’ cable only. He then swapped back the original 2011 OBC and the car now charges again with an EVSE (‘brick’ type only).

There was talk that some early models could use both ‘brick’ or ‘non brick’ leads, however this claim seems to be unsubstantiated (so far), and the EVSE suggested is most likely not going to work out with @Rational ’s car

Mine would not charge on the house project ev charger with the earlier 2010 registered obc. Runs fine with original 2011 obc. Likewise leads were not interchangeable.

And your 'original 2011 obc' is just a straight cable?

No, straight cable, but intriguingly it’s OBC is actually from 2015 (long story, interesting read)

Yes, all type 1 granny leads should work with a ‘brick’ type I-Miev

OP: My understanding is that it was only the 'pre-production' i-MiEVs that came to the UK *at the latest* in 2010 that have 'dumb' mains AC charging, ie the UK mains charging cable that came with the car has no active electronics in it at all, just a pair of resistors and a microswitch in the Type 1 plug that interact with the car when the 2 are connected.

I'm pretty sure these cars were all originally red and white painted but were sold to the likes of SSE who had them 'wrapped' in suitably 'eco'-looking graphics - in SSE's case, green with white wind turbines (like the 2009 one I own and that is still my daily runaround).

They also charge at a rather alarming ~13A which is too much for the UK plug/socket combo and will almost certainly eventually overheat unless the plug is kept very clean and dry (and even then it is asking for trouble). Every other pEVSE (granny cable) sold in the UK since is restricted to 10A, only.

So, the pEVSE you show (230V not 200V - if it really *is* 200 volts then it will probably die on first connection to the UK mains) should work with your 2 EVs as well as any other equipped with a Type 1 (J1772) mains AC charging socket. My experience of Chinese pEVSEs (which is pretty extensive - I have been selling and repairing them and EU-made ones for 10 years) is that they are generally well designed and well-built and *way* less prone to failure than the hugely more complex and expensive European offerings as supplied with all the EU-made big name EVs and hybrids.

So is it risky for me to test my Nissan charge cable with the box and lights on it on my i-miev?

I won't try the bare i-mieve straight cable on the Leaf as I just assume it's risky without the electronics inside to protect the Leaf, right?

I may buy that $130 EVSE cable and see if it works on both as they say.

They are essentially JDM direct imports, @alviseven confimed, they don’t have a ‘proper’ VIN, just a chassis number. OP is based in Okinawa and his is a early JDM version..

My 2011 plate normal car has 2011 obc and brick type lead as well as green cmu obc

Still looking for a green cmu 09 board.
 
Interesting. My obc is dated 2017. I was assuming that someone had to have it replaced at some point because of failure as the car was a 2011 model. So... are you saying they dated these older obc units with a future date?

Like @alviseven ‘s OBC, yours seem to have been replaced, however it appears that these newer models were modified (different FW?) to be compatible with your ‘straight’ cable and don’t work with a level 1/2 EVSE.

It should therefore possible to re-configure the OBC for ‘normal’ use with MUT/Diagbox but only if you can source the correct file to download, don’t think anyone has succeeded.
