I mentioned disabling the light in Park because the light could come on when charging, but if you tap power from the accessory port for example, that wouldn't be an issue. You might be able to put a slider on the switch so that the light is disabled in Neutral, but can still work for Reverse.
Here's somewhat of an example for the shifter switch. This is a normally closed push button switch so that when the car is in any gear except neutral, the light can light up. When the car is put into Neutral, the shift lever (~) pushes down on the switch, opening the circuit and disabling the light so that it won't light up when coasting. It's important to note that the actual button part is curved so that the shift lever can slide over it. In this drawing, the car is in Eco mode.
