    Ha! I just made a coast/neutral button!

Yes I agree, I do a lot of shifting from D to N and back (mostly on the freeway) as previously discussed. I just naturally smoothed the transitions with throttle positioning. For instance the car seems to have a good controlled ramp if you shift from N into a driving gear. However if you shift...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

I'm not sure where you are referring to exactly. I'm not up for opening the OBC cover while it's still under warranty. Can you discern the difference from a good picture of the outside of the cover? Aerowhatt

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

Sure I will do that as soon as I can. Some life complications at present unfortunately. What would be best perhaps a template for the bracket? The blower used is critical a lesser one will not make the cut. I just got those temp switches in yesterdays mail. They came all the way from China which...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

"Reduces or eliminates bubbles or vapor barrier that form on hot metal surfaces to reduce coolant temperatures by up to 20°" Yeah pretty unlikely that this will make a difference at the coolant temps on the iMiev. More geared toward the near vaporization temps found in ICE engine cylinder...

    Shore Trip

Actually Don isn't far off the mark. Remember that the car has overhead loads just being turned on. Often referred to as "vampire" loads on the forum. Personally I like overhead loads since my favorite little car shouldn't have anything suggesting undead, blood sucking, murderer related to it...

Thanks JoeS, I think the brackets still look handmade . . . likely because they are handmade. It's a nice sturdy fit though. As for the cleanliness under the hood. I've always done all of my own mechanic work on vehicles. They are just a lot easier and more pleasant to work on if kept...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

As designed the OEM cooling system delivered the following results. Under L-2 the case temperature peaked at 56F above ambient temp. Under L-1 (12 amp) the case temperature peaked at 48F above ambient temp. So charging L-1 only delivered a ~15% decrease in charger temperature rise. I didn't...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

So a bit of an update. I have had the updated bracket in the car most of the week and working in "automatic" mode. The thermal switches that I ordered for this project are set to arrive in tomorrows mail. :) So far I'm pretty happy with the function (these are all L2 charges). With the...

    Why is 240V 3x faster than 120V

Yes, that's what I have used for the last two years. It's an accurate and nice round number. I judge when I will be topped up and ready to go by the 20% per hour calculation (easy to do in one's head). I just add 35 minutes for the last 10% because it tapers. Aerowhatt

I don't think it's paranoia. Given the internal temps that Kiev has posted it's a valid concern. I've gotten the blower airflow optimized and my wife is out of town this weekend. so I should get the bracket jig together and a few brackets made (she calls things like this "goofing off" so...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

Yeah, I don't think a heat sink is in order. It might even get in the way with the close quarters when the "hood" is down. The key is lots of fresh air. These blowers I am using are amazing. Thinking computer fan would be way off the mark. These things kick out high velocity, large quantities of...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

OK . . . so does this make sense? Looking back at the numbers the lowest coolant temp and case temp numbers were both achieved with aggressive air cooling the charger case only. If the coolant temperature is lower then the components that Kiev has just pictured on the aluminum heatsink...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

Wow thanks for taking the time to get these numbers Kiev :!: I was tempted . . . but thought better of opening mine up and risking warranty refusal, god forbid. The rub is that these components will run even hotter without the charger cases cover removed and they bathe all the components around...

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. It's valuable information that should get recorded for others who run into the same issue! Aerowhatt

Do you have a picture of the charger setup in the 2012? It sounds different than the 2014. Aerowhatt

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

It's not the cooling system of the car. It is well engineered and delivers coolant back to the parts needing cooled at just a couple of degrees above ambient temperature and only 11F or 12F above ambient with the AC cranking full bore while being driven. So the cars cooling system is awesome...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

So far my data clearly shows that the fluid cooling of the charger is not designed that well. Sure it helps to blow air through the radiator and/or run the circulating pump full time too while charging. Even with these steps the charger still runs hot. Cooling the charger directly with air...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

Right now it is temporary, separate 12 ah AGM. The DC to DC output is right there and easy to connect to. The negative will go to ground (likely to the bracket for the blower). Fuse (3 amp) right at the positive connection to the DC to DC post then to a surface temp switch on the opposite end of...
