How to send a private message or reply to a forum member?

In this case just wanted to send a thank you note out of the cabin filter topic to the guy who did the group purchase ... And say my filter's arrived days ago.
(Figured better than cluttering up the topic with a lot off "mine got here too" notes.)

Discovered I didn't know how to send private reply to a public subject or even originate a private note.

Only way I'd been able to do that in the past was if someone had sent a private post to me and I replied to that.
