Re: New Owner - Ben got an iMiEV - Again!

Hi Folks,

I did a write-up on my entire garage solar system. If you want to learn how to build your own PV system from scratch, here's one way to do it.

https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Solar-Garage/

As far as EVSEs that are designed to work WITH solar, there's not much out there. I actually had an idea for how to build one where it would measure how much power was made at the solar, and then vary the output to the car to match. A week after I had the idea, I found a UK manufacturer that were making EXACTLY that as a crowd-sourced product!

Robert L. on Fully Charged did an episode on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EtegQfZQRw

I always thought that on an EVSE where you can open it up and actually get at the PWM pins, those could be rerouted to an Arduino, and use that to control the Amp rate setting of the car. The Arduino could read power production from the solar, then create a PWM signal, to control the car to the matching charge rate.

I played around a little with using a clamp-on meter and arduino to measure current.

I also read in an issue or two back in HOME POWER magazine, in letters to the editor, an off-grid D.I.Y. used the current sensing feature in his solar equipment to create a signal and then send it to his Open EVSE, which would then change the current to the car.

I think that for DIY, probably a little clever programming to the Open EVSE is probably the way to go. I do have an Open EVSE circuit board, but just need some time to go through actually building a unit, and then after that figuring out how to send some solar current info to it.

What do we want as far as our iMievs go?

My thoughts include:

1. Documenting/open sourcing all of the CAN messages, perhaps with something like this: http://www.savvycan.com
2. Reverse engineering and open sourcing iMiev components, such as the AC compressor and related circuit boards, so that when failures occur, owners have an alternative to the exorbitant Mitsubishi prices, see, e.g., https://www.youtube.com/user/pooey1911

I also think it would be VERY interesting to be able to PULL power from the car for a DIY Vehicle to Home setup.

I found a 3D printed CHAdeMO connection on Thingiverse. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:121581

There was a thread here where one of the members showed how to trick on the CHAdeMO port.

Now if I can just find a hybrid solar inverter that's 60 Hz and an affordable price, I don't think there's much stopping us. (In solar PV, a series string of panels is often between 200 and 600VDC. One that can handle that should be able to handle an iMiEV battery pack as an input!)

Per his site and YouTube video, a logging truck hit Ben while he was on his electric motorcycle and seriously injured him.

He seems to be healing and I'm sure that we all hope that continues and that he returns to full health.
