Swapping OBC's as diagnostic - safe?

It might be worth disconnecting the heater, IF you can do that safely. Like the air conditioning, a fault with it might stop the contactors from coming on. With no contactors, you can't charge the main battery.

Swapping OBC's as diagnostic - safe?

So that sounds like it's a problem with the car. So that's possibly harnesses/cables, J1772 socket, or fuses/relays.

The Troubleshooting and Repair for On-board Charger (OBC) Thread

That's most easily tested (along with a few other components) with this handy photo: The "½Ω" refers to when the pre-charge relay is on; that's a little more difficult to test. All the details are available via the index (first few posts) of this thread. I just happened to come across this...

    2011 OBC Compatible?

? Two capacitors in parallel results in double the capacitance of one. The two capacitors are meant to be in parallel; they are C121 and C122: On the horrible daughter board with SMD capacitors, those are in some sort of series-parallel arrangement, but the reliability of those is so low...

    2011 OBC Compatible?

No. They are made by the same company (Nichicon), and there are some similarities in parts, but wildly different case, and almost certainly all the CAN bus codes will be different.

Your red board even has some parts populated that mine doesn't. But perhaps that's because mine is a 4-cell board (no connector at the bottom). Quite a lot of the parts disappear at that end for 4-cell boards. I removed some of the red coating to be able to make contact with the test points. I...

    Battery pack change plans

I found this in my notes: So maybe the red boards have some feature that Mitsubishi decided was not needed, so they deleted the parts in the green boards. It's hard to imagine it working with the changes I have seen. But seeing it working (albeit not driving) is what matters! Do your red...

Citroen C Zero suddenly not AC Charging

I have a career in software and electronics engineering. A friend of a friend has a car he is converting using iMiEV components, so I got interested in them. Also, a local EV garage asks me to fix iMiEV chargers now and then, and Kiev had a lot of the information needed on the troubleshooting...

Citroen C Zero suddenly not AC Charging

Good work! I hate to tell you but it's a good idea to keep the leads to those capacitors fairly short. The long leads add unwanted inductance to the path, so these capacitors can't do their job of absorbing very brief switching transients. Also, they may foul the board above. Finally, and you...

options for OBC replacement / repair

I'll agree with that. Though I've maybe only fixed 8 or so. But I agree with Kiev that it doesn't necessarily indicate catastrophic failure. But it's definitely not a good look. I see a fine white powder on the black potting material in some photos. Is that just dust settled from the boards...

    Battery pack change plans

My guess is that the daisy chained wiring is only used when the auto-renumber facility is used. [ Edit: Looks like I may have guessed wrong; see next post. ] I assume that swapping two CMUs is a lot easier than swapping 16 cells. So I would give it a try just swapping the CMUs. If the car...

options for OBC replacement / repair

    5. Repair it yourself. It might cost you a few days and a few dollars. But you should be comfortable with high voltage electronics. The troubleshooting and repair thread is a great help.

    Battery pack change plans

I'm dubious that a 2015 On Board Charger can operate without an EVSE (black brick). I've never heard of such a modification, though I guess it must be possible. I have heard that some of the 2010 On Board Chargers can work with or without the brick. It's possible that the 2010 has to work with...

    Help Please With 2009 i-MiEV: P1A33, P1A30, P1A39, P1A76 & P1A52

Oh, OK. I don't even remember how I did it on the bench. My notes, when I find them, will tell me 😳. But you could put 12 V power on the main battery shell; I'll agree that's not ideal. From memory, the CMUs draw some or all of their power from the auxiliary (12 V) battery. Resistance...

    Battery pack change plans

I sorted that out in this post. That's why all the AEVA links work. My guess is that their conversion software (converting the posts database to prepare for the new forum software) had a bug. A lot of links would be to the first post of a thread, so they just didn't notice. In short: "So just...
