The Troubleshooting and Repair for On-board Charger (OBC) Thread

hello - am I understanding this correctly that these cap and resistor are there to protect the relay contact, mainly upon disconnect ? if so, would it more prudent to turn off charging externally by turning off the EVSE AC power rather relying on the relay contact ? am just looking for some...

    Supplemental cooling for the charger.

Finally get a chance to poke around the on board charger/DCDC. Boy that thing can really get warm. It seems that one of the problem is that there is no way for the hot air to circulate, it gets all pooled into that canopy. Aerowhatt's fan is great but I would add a hose to duct cooler air...

[POLL] On-Board Charger and DC/DC Converter

    1. Year and mileage on your iMiev: 2014, ~20kmiles 2. OBC failure experience: none, but now always lift up rear hatch when charging L2 since learned of the problem on this forum. Thank you all so much !! 3. 12V Battery Condition, Age: original 4. 12V Battery Maintenance Frequency and...

    12 kW chademo charging

That's an excellent point. In a standard PV gridtie set up, the panels themselves are current the limiter. I guess one way is to add a panel in series to the Chamedo DC, without killing oneself first, to serve as current limiter. Of course the total string voltage would increase, but these...

    12 kW chademo charging

so has any one yet to connect a grid-tie inverter to the Chamedo port ? even with the grid on, to see if it works ? Joes, Morningstar has a relatively new 600vdc charge controller: https://www.morningstarcorp.com/products/tristar-mppt-600v/ which you could rig up to your ground mounted PV...

New Owner - Ben got an iMiEV - Again!

I've contacted Solaredge and the word is that the integrated inverter is essentially a grid-tie inverter with a built-in EVSE. So it will shut down without grid power, at least with the current release anyway later this year. It doesn't have a preference setting to use more solar power over...

New Owner - Ben got an iMiEV - Again!

very nice looking installation and panels. They look like Astronergy panels I have on my roof. I am wondering if you have a plan to keep the micro-inverter on during power outage, in order to continue charging your iMiev ? eventually, you can pick up an "inexpensive" used iMiev/Leaf and keep...

Best charging practices for battery longevity

thanks for all replies. I did find this yesterday "..• 75–65% SoC offers longest cycle life • EVs use 85–25% SoC to prolong battery life • 100–25% SoC gives long runtime, makes best use of battery, but reduces battery life." at this web site...

Best charging practices for battery longevity

I just re-read this thread for the same reason as the title, but for a BoltEV application. Let's say if the iMiev has a 60kwh pack and your typical daily usage only needs 16kwh, about 60-miles, or about 25% of the pack capacity. What is the recommended SOC % to hover around for daily...

    Solar panel charging

We have already have a 5kw grid-tie system and am just toying with the idea of adding more panels. The easier and most cost effective way would be to slap on additional panels with micro-inverter grid-tied. Since our address is already permitted for solar production, it ought to work just...

    Solar panel charging

Given that PV panels and inverters prices are definitely getting better and better; I am thinking of adding some panels diy but don't want to hassle with permit and inspection etc... I recently found a local distributor so I wouldn't have to pay shipping. One option is to do an...

12 Volt battery is failing, I'm looking for replacement

my plan is to go cheap, since i don't think there is very much demand on the 12v battery. https://www.harborfreight.com/12-volt-35-amp-hour-universal-battery-68680.html $70 at HFreight (less the usual 20% coupon). I've used these on numerous Prius. Is there any reason this 35Ah 12v...

    Life with Chevy Bolt EV

I mis-quoted yesterday, my final cost was $32K for the LT after the $7500 fed, $2500 CA, PGE (electric util) $500. I've heard that the leather seat is not as comfortable due to the stiffer feel of the seat edges, digging into your legs. PV1 - my daughter never really pays attention to her...

    Life with Chevy Bolt EV

Don - if you lease, you sort of indirectly get the fed tax credit, as the dealer includes the credit in the lease calculation

    Life with Chevy Bolt EV

thought I chime in. We got our BoltEV on Jan 1 and my daughter has been the main driver. My plan was to purchase the Bolt in the spring as there was a waiting list. We were at the dealer to test drive one and there was one available because the reservation was canceled. So we paid a little...

Best charging practices for battery longevity

I am experimenting with a new ChargePoint Home Station, mainly to participate in the pilot submetering program with our electric company here in Northern CA. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that I can set the station start/end time via a cell phone app. So I am thinking, if I can...

Using the battery as an emergency supply

would the i have to be in non-ready mode ? i believe L1/L2 charging only occurs in off ? Thanks for the tip by the way.

Using the battery as an emergency supply

Since we live in the hills and sometimes the roads get closed; I am also planning to charge the i from the roof top solar panels when it's sunny out. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to charge the i while in ready mode; but not a problem since it'll be day time and sunny.
