Making a custom battery pack for MiEV

Your task is simple: Make an exact copy of the LEV50/LEV50N battery cell in every dimension but with newer chemistry. This includes perfectly copying the terminal base plates and 8mm terminal studs. Make it a direct swap for the stock Yuasa cells with no other parts needed. Use a chemistry with...

Main Traction Battery Upgrade i-MiEV using CATL93Ah cells

That has not been my experience but I am not using stock anything other than CMUs. Those guys need to chime in but based on my experience, there will be a lot of movement in the relative positions of the 3mm threaded holes when torqueing down the bus bars regardless of what non-OE cell you are...

Main Traction Battery Upgrade i-MiEV using CATL93Ah cells

You cannot do this as the torqueing process will rip the CMU's floating contacts apart when the bus bars rotate. The bus bars must be fully torqued before attaching the CMUs. I saw movement of up to a millimeter when torqueing down the bus bars. The cells in Piev's/MRadtke's setup are located...

Making a custom battery pack for MiEV

My son and I designed a replacement cell in CAD that held 14x 2170 Tesla cylindrical cells. They fit in the same space as a stock LEV50 and would require a custom PCB for the top voltage collector. You'd have to print 88x plastic shells. There would be little cooling due to having to hold the...

Main Traction Battery Upgrade i-MiEV using CATL93Ah cells

Hi Michael, The L-shaped bus bars as shown in Post #267 cannot work since they interfere with the upper plastic CMU holder. There is a plastic partition between cells and the L-shaped bus bars would have to pass through the partition or you'd have to remove plastic to make it work. That is not...

Main Traction Battery Upgrade i-MiEV using CATL93Ah cells

I deleted both the simple and the L-shaped bus bar files on Printables so the links to Printable files on Post #286 for bus bars do not work and should be deleted in the post. The L-shaped bus bar I designed does not and cannot work. The simple bus bar also does not work as I found out during...

Main Traction Battery Upgrade i-MiEV using CATL93Ah cells

It is my opinion that sharing the specific part files I made for the last set of Piev's cells would be of little use as it seems that the cell dimensions and terminal details change from batch to batch. The first set he used was very different from the second. -Jim

Main Traction Battery Upgrade i-MiEV using CATL93Ah cells

The bus bar issue was figured out. Single CMU taps were made to go underneath the stock Mitsubishi bus bars. Where there was no CMU connection a simple, laser cut rectangular washer was used instead as a spacer.

Need to find a seller with many reviews that has something to lose over a hit to reputation.

    The aftermarket cell replacement saga

I put in a request for quote or MOQ under the guise of a business owner and never heard back. Nary a peep.

    Play Whack-A-Mole with Jiminy!

As far as finding weak cells goes, I have not seen a case where they are all similarly bad. There are usually a dozen or less at a time that sag deeply under load near the end of SOC. Those cells keep you from seeing all of the other bad ones since one or two trips the turtle and then you are...

    Play Whack-A-Mole with Jiminy!

Sorry, I concur that in the silver patient car the GOM and bars are meaningless. There is nothing that can predict range other than prior experience and a fair understanding of what Canion is showing me under load and when at rest. On my car I only use bars remaining for a range estimate. It...

    Play Whack-A-Mole with Jiminy!

Wow Mickey, you are really making me work for it :) When I first fully charged the current silver patient (as her owner calls her), I saw 39 miles of RR on GOM. I could get 27 miles if I was gentle which I am. If I could actually get 39 miles out of this car with the given financial...

    My Lifepo4 12V battery setup

As an aside I looked for 20Ah Lifepo4 batteries on Amazon.fr and Amazon.uk but there were absolutely none. There were some 7ish Ah batteries but then it went up to 100Ah. Seems there is a protectionist mechanism or some weird UK/euro rule about it. Makes me kinda annoyed. The Chin's has plenty...
