i-MiEV Repair around Seattle

Thu Mar 05, 2020 3:47 pm

Hello All,

I'm no longer just a hobbyist, am now running an EV upgrade, repair and conversion shop on Bainbridge Island, WA. We specialize in VW Bus conversions and upgrade of Nissan LEAF battery packs, but as I'm rather experienced with the i-MiEV, would be happy to handle non-warranty repairs such as OBC (chargerr) replacements, heaters, rumbling CV joints, and battery pack replacements (with OEM salvage packs, not an upgraded capacity battery).

please email me with any requests; amped at evworks.us

company website is being fleshed out at www.evworks.us

That’s awesome! I moved your post out onto its own thread so it’s easier to find.

Thank you, here’s a post about our new LEAF battery upgrade services. Unfortunately there is no such option for the I-MiEV.

Congratulations, Jay. Luckily, everything on mine has been in warranty yet. Glad to have this information for future reference.

It's interesting, but it's like $10K U.S. Hard to justify.

Very interesting, and great to see 3rd party development and expansion for i-MiEVs. Doubling the range is a considerable boost to the car's usability for many people. I think I heard elsewhere that they have to fake the car's measurements to access the additional range. I still wonder if the original capacity calculator would eventually open up to the whole pack. I know it's a different beast entirely, but one of my old phones managed to nearly completely adjust to a battery more than 3 times the original capacity. Runtime was amazing (3 days of hard use), but it took all night to charge.

Kinda curious on that one-pedal system they have. Would the ABS system be able to independently apply the brakes, and do it smoothly? On my Bolt, it can apply the brakes on its own, but using hardware that the i-MiEV doesn't have (an electric brake booster, and possibly extra pump hardware on the brake lines). When it activates, it makes a loud, very rapid pumping sound. Of course, when this activates, the car comes to an abrupt stop.

I think that the economic viability of this product will may depend in part on the daily driving distance one must drive. If the alternative is to spend $10k to achieve the needed driving distance rather than $30-40k or more for a longer range car, then I see the product succeeding. Doubling our range would more than meet all of our daily driving needs, including any commute, which at one time was 40+ miles a day. It would also make longer trips, say 100+ miles, much more viable and interesting.

Moreover, as our batteries degrade, the same analysis applies. Why buy new when you can replace/upgrade the traction battery for a lot less money?

Come that time, assuming it’s availability here in the US, we would probably upgrade.

I've been in contact with Graeme for a long time, and have happily offered to be the first customer for his long range battery in the USA, with an eye towards becoming an affiliated installer. He's carefully moving towards an international release once all the documentation is in order. From the last few years of Leaf battery upgrades and custom EV building, I appreciate that learning how to do it yourself is an achievement, but idiot-proofing the process for implementation by others is another thing entirely!!!
