Amongst the promotion and hype of the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt and the upcoming Ford Focus Electric, the electric vehicle with the best mileage rating is the unheralded Mitsubishi i.
The Mitsubishi i debuted in Japan in 2009 as the Mitsubishi i-Miev, and was initiated in Europe in 2010, and will soon be available in the US.
Despite it’s mileage ratings of 126MPGe in the city and 112 MPGe combined, the Mitsubishi i has yet to build a substantial buying appeal. MotorTrend thinks it could be due to North American customers not yet ready for a “small, underpowered and range limited EV.”
Originally the Mitsubishi i was going to be delivered in late 2011, but the Mitsubishi website now states ‘arriving early 2012’.
Reports state the the Mitsubishi i has about 400 pre-orders so far compared to the thousands of pre-orders Nissan had for it’s Leaf before they started deliveries.
