A good, well documented review giving both the positives and negatives of these wonderful little cars . . . . which means of course there's no future for you reviewing automobiles!

You said the 2017 was different than earlier US models. What differences were you thinking of? Your 2017 looks like my 2012. I'm pretty sure some models with the upgraded navigation, rear view camera and radio came with bluetooth connectivity. Some models also were delivered without the Chademo port, which his a really serious downside in my mind.

He refers to extended range (larger battery?) in the video -- and says it's one of only six (!) units with this capability. I hadn't heard of that previously.

You state in your video that tires should be rotated as with any other vehicle. This is incorrect. The imiev has two different size tires on the car. 145/65 R15's on the front, and 175/60 R15's on the back and should NOT be rotated.

selmateacher, thank you for your nice video which is a great introduction to our car.

This is the first I had heard of a "Long Range" i-MiEV, and I also would like some corroboration of that assertion as well as details of this battery pack. Note that there was no EPA rating change (after it was bureaucratically downgraded from 62 to 59 a few years ago). Although judicious hypermiling on the flat and warm San Juaquin Valley could readily produce RR=99 on a new 16kWh battery, a consistent RR of 99 without hypermiling is 'interesting' and maybe does indicate a change? Enquiring minds want to know, as I would have expected Mitsubishi to tout this ... although by 2017 they had given up on the i-MiEV for the US market.

0-60 in nine seconds also doesn't sound right, as our previous US versions have the (infuriating) acceleration ramp-up that gets us into the 14-second region. Looking at KiwiEV's videos shows that the European version did indeed accelerate a bit faster (12 seconds), but nowhere near 9 seconds. Get rid of that ramp-up and 150A current limit and I bet she'd do it in under 9 seconds as IIRC this same motor was used in some of Mitsu's performance vehicles.

Nice review, although you definitely should post some shots from CaniOn showing battery capacity and acceleration power. Never heard of an "upscale" i-MiEV for the US. It seems yours has:

1. Larger battery
2. More powerful motor
3. 5th Seat belt, for a very narrow middle, rear passenger.
4. Possibly upgraded heater? Granted, CA is quite a bit warmer than PA in the winter.
   :!: :!:

Dropbox maintenance in progress. If any of my links aren't working after November 17, please PM me and let me know which one isn't working.

Thanks.

This car is great fun to drive. I drove the Japanese version and the one in Japan was indeed slower. About the CaniOn app: That app does not recognize this car's battery configuration. So I tried the OBDZero app, but still the readout is "N/A" for the battery pack. Other features work in the apps, but they cannot read the battery info. So the battery pack has a difference in total capacity. If it is still only 16KWh, that would make this battery pack and EV more efficient than any other EV, I have ever driven. But I highly doubt that. I believe an upgraded North American controller and battery pack are the cause for the faster 0-60 times and longer range. I waited a year to produce this review video, because this 2017 MiEV gave me a different result than Japanese and 2016 MiEV that I had driven in the past and I wanted to make sure that it was not a 'bad' reading of the range. After consistently finding the range to be near 100 miles, I decided to go ahead and publish my findings.

Speculating, perhaps they changed nothing other than software:

1. For acceleration, simply did away with the artificial ramp-up and upped the 150A max current limit.
2. For range/battery capacity, maybe they reprogrammed to allow the battery a lower usable voltage limit (and perhaps reducing the invisible 'turtle' range)?

Or maybe they're using yet even further-improved batteries and didn't bother recertifying their EPA rating. Aren't these same cells used in their Highlander (edit: Outlander) PHEV? Edit: question was answered and the Outlander uses a smaller 40Ah cell.

I was gobsmacked that a 2017 USA version i-MiEV even exists, as the only other "2017" I know of (bradleydavidgood77) was built in 2016. Don't suppose you want to share the VIN?

Also, IIRC, CaniOn has troubles reading 2016 i-MiEVs.

Whatever... it sure sounds like you have a unique car and it's serving you well!

the miev specs on the mitsubishi web site show range of 160 km (100 miles) with 16kwh battery pack... Wow! The rest of the world has a more efficient version now.
