Of all your charging stops on the trip, whichever outlets they have are likely the adapters you'll need. I have:

14 to L6-30 (compatible with both 14-30 and 14-50 outlets. The neutral pin is removed as it is not necessary.)
10-30 to L6-20
5-15 to L6-30
L6-30 to L6-20 "Dogbone" adapter (I need this for my L6-30 adapters)
14-50 extension cord (mainly used with my Eaton Pow-R-Station that I converted to plug-in, but also works with the EVSEUpgrade with adapters.)

I looked on PlugShare to see what all plug types were available in possible areas of travel. I opted to get the L6-20 end on my EVSEUpgrade, and I use the dogbone to connect with two of my adapters, which have L6-30 ends on them.

What I've found is that level 2 stations fed by single-phase power charge faster than those connected to a panel being fed by 3-phase. The reason for this is that in a 3-phase facility, one only gets 208 volts between two hots, not 240 volts like from single-phase (difference between home charging vs. charging at a dealer for example). Since power in Watts is Volts X Amps, the car gets more power with higher voltage (since the amperage draw stays the same). The RV park could've had a slightly better connection to the grid, and the level 1 voltage was a little higher than at home, so the car charged a little faster (difference between 115 and 125 volts, for example).

Mainly I will need the one to plug into the TT 30? Plug outlet.
The campground near us has that kind of outlet, and the regular 110v plug. I am going to drive out to the Lena IL KOA to see what the outlet pattern/plug looks like there. I just have this horrible thought of actually finding a place to plug in somewhere and not having the correct connector.

OK...I pride myself on knowing almost everything about my i-Miev.
I was checking out the air compressor and tire repair kit and it came to me.
What if I am in the middle of the Mojave next spring and have a flat? Is there a Jack
Somewhere if I need to remove a tire?
Sheesh.

rkarl89203, I moved your question into your ongoing trip topic. For any significant i-MiEV trips I carry a Rubbermaid box with two Gen1 Honda Insight spare tires (really lightweight), a scissor jack, and a lug wrench. Had it with me when the Yokohama tire shredded about 30 miles from home. For my cross-country Tesla trip I only carried a tire plug kit and 12v air compressor, but luckily didn't need them.

Ok..
Got my NEMA 14-50 cord from EVSE upgrade
Tried it at local campground. Good L2 rate
16 mph. Way better than 110V.

So far looks like about 21 days on the return trip.
Both ways not quite 5000 miles,.under $7000
Total.

Absolutely.
I am finalizing everything this week, and I will give the plan....
By the way did you notice the new Chargepoint chargers at Petrified Forest and Painted Desert on Plugshare?
Awesome!

Awesome!

Those make that leg of the trip easier.

BTW, are you taking a drone? I think that you could get some amazing shots with one on this record breaking trip!

:D

You know, I hadn't thought of that... I will have a GoPro, and a very good video recorder, but a drone?
Hmm...
Interesting thought. I actually HAVE a drone, but no video capability....
Reading back through this thread, though...I am intrigued by the thought of regenerative recharging going from Flagstaff westward. This should also work from Oatman to Topock, UNLESS west winds are a major
Factor.

I'm no expert on drones, but I've watching the Jehugarcia YouTube channel and he uses drones rather effectively:

https://youtu.be/UCcxh1RjQ-E

If you refer to a map with altitudes, you will see the leaving Flagstaff and going west on the 40 is downhill. It should make for a long run!

:D

rkarl89203:

Given the variety of possible charging outlets, could you share what charging cord, adapters and/or surge protectors you are bringing with you?

I think that RV parks and campgrounds typically have 120v and 240v available in 14-30 or 14-50 outlets and have read that the consistency of the electricity varies based on the age of the campground. I have also read that a surge protector should be used to check the voltage and connections, such as: http://trci.net/products/surge-guard-rv

I don't know much about RV parks and campgrounds but we would likely need to plan for their use to enable our eventual travel on I-17 to Prescott and Flagstaff.

In any event, thoughts on the subject?

Absolutely. We will be carrying our EVSE upgrade cord for Level 1 7mph charging from a regular outlet.
Also we have a NEMA 14-50 adapter cord for "50 amp" charging with our EVSE upgraded cord..
Testing at 3 seperate campgrounds here in Illinois has yielded a 16 mph charge with the NEMA 14-50 , comparable to a Level 2 charger.
We will bring a surge tester/protector but we havent purchased one yet.
On my solo return trip, RV parks and campgrounds will be a large part of my charging plan.
145 days left!
Looking forward to our awesome trip !
The actual Itinerary with chargers will be posted soon.

By the way we continue to enjoy our great little imiev. Did regenerative braking on our way to and from
Great Lakes NTC yesterday, using chargers on a side trip to Palatine (Round trip total 190 miles.)
We got amazing miles from the Regen . If we can do similar on our trip we can really save some time and money.

You can rent a portable Chademo charger from evseadapters.com, it'll make the charging quicker. Of course, if you're charging while you're sleeping, that's a nonissue.
Quite a journey you have planned, and plenty of opportunities to discover interesting points along the way - looking forward to following your progress!
I've found wind velocity to be the single greatest impact to my range on flat land - your eastbound trip will likely be easier for this reason.
