The boat manufacturer in Slovenia is Alfastreet Marine. Unfortunately, this 'review' was sorely lacking in technical detail, and I was especially intrigued by its motor/propeller/rudder combination that I couldn't find anywhere online. Pretty boat, and that rooftop begs for lightweight flexible solar panels - with the boat sitting in a marina or at anchor, such panels would keep the battery pack nicely topped-up.

According to the site, the boat they had in the video was the 23 cabin.

It looks like crusing around at 3-4 knots (3.5-4.5 MPH) with the optional 25 kWh battery, one can expect a range of 62 miles. at 6 knots, the range is 43 miles. Not too bad, similar to the i-MiEV's range without regen.

I bet those are pricy.

You could certainly try. The reason they zig-zagged the UK in that way was due to the charging infrastructure. There are a few issues:

1. They started charging £6 ($8) for a CHAdeMO charge (up to last month it was free), which is self-defeatingly expensive for what would be at most 50 miles in an I-MIEV to 80% SOC. That's considerably more expensive than most typical gas cars, and thus I would just elect to take the Insight, which returns 60 MPG imperial without any trouble at all. Thats a problem now - this must be linked to government funding, so I also have a fear that the CHAdeMO infrastructure may suffer because of it... but these things can change.

2. I made a 55 mile round trip on the highway north from where I live last weekend. I got to the destination with half a charge, but unfortunately the wind picked up on the return journey, and I got to 2 miles range predicted when I was 8 miles of 70mph roads away. I had to drop speed to 45mph for the last but - I managed to creep home, but the turtle was flashing and I must have been perilously close to running out of juice. That came after a recent spate of fantastic suburban economy runs for work, where I has to visit a client half way across the boundaries of London - which was mainly 35mph constant speed - so my range went up to the high 90s for the first time. I was making it across 20 miles of London outer roads on 4-5KWh - which is absolutely fantastic.

3. Chademos are on the highways - but if you want to see the country, you want to go on the non-highway routes - so absence of 90% of the CHAdeMO network. Also, the speed limit is 70mph, which means most are doing 80mph+ on the faster runs, so youll be behind a huge trailer for most of your trip at 61mph, which is also a pain. Its not a big country by US standards, but it's not small, and it's large enough to have some 60-80 mile gaps between chargers.

4. To do this sort of trip I reluctantly come to the conclusion that a 100 mile range is probably needed - as that means roughly 80 after a CHAdeMO, and the chargers are often 40 miles apart. So in an I-MIEV, you would be constantly planning your quickest next CHAdeMO, rather than enjoying the journey - especially in the more beautiful and less populated areas such as most of the national parks and areas of beauty. Planning this sort of trip is a game of probability, you need 2 x the greatest distance between CHAdeMOs on the journey, so that you don't get stuffed if you get to a broken one - otherwise you are severely lacking the contingency needed to not get caught with your pants down.

5. Then there is the issue of chargers not working when you get there, which could be a problem if the app is not completely up to date - which I have been caught out with once.

6. However - that would be a beautiful trip to make in the summer.

As far as the I-MIEV goes - I maintain in my rushed existence (where the ability to keep tabs on all things is inversely proportional to how busy I am) that the car is perfectly suited to the suburbs of a large city, as I don't really have to know my remaining range in fear of running out as journeys are mostly short, and by product - slight battery degradation over time is unlikely to be a huge issue.
