Finally got myself a J1772 to IEC 62196-2 (aka Type 1 to Type 2) cable for some public slow charging. The Type 2 is commonly found in shopping malls around here and also at some service stations with up to three phase 230V 32A 22 kW available. Obviously the i-MiEV and it's brethren can only consume a little over 3 kW, but it's better than nothing.
The cable I got:

Fresh cable and some hot charging action at the nearest supermarket:

Looks like 5 meters was the way to go. The 32A cable is a bit thick, but I got one in case I get a Soul EV or the new Leaf in a few years time. Then I'll be able to use their full 6,6 kW charging without buying a new cable.
