The top of the rear bumper gathers dirt and is exposed to items loaded into and unloaded from the rear cargo area. This could lead to the paint on the top almost horizontal area of the rear bumper being scratched. I have wondered whether a clear plastic film coating could be installed over this area of the bumper to protect it. Has anyone considered such a solution? Is there a clear plastic film that could be installed without bubbles or wrinkles and that would be durable over time?

I wonder if there is something like this available for the i-MiEV. I had one of these on my Mazda 3.

Here is some clear protective film, you can buy it by the size and then apply it to the rear bumper area. This is made for the door sill (the part you step over to get in and out of the car when the door is open) but would do the same job on the rear bumper.

I couldn't find anything that was custom cut for the i-Miev, except this kit to protect the front bumper from rock chips:

They make no mention of it being UV stable, so no telling how long it will last being constantly exposed to the sun - When applied to the door jambs as recommended, it seldom sees the sun, so UV isn't a concern like it is for the top of the rear bumper

Good point! However, the same manufacturer sells kits to protect headlights and other areas of the car exposed to sunlight. Fortunately, our i-MiEV spends almost all of its life parked inside a parking garage where it isn't exposed to sunlight, but the sunlight that it is exposed to is very intense. I'll have to do a little more research before buying.
