Here is an interesting video on a new hybrid Peugeot Citroen is developing that runs on compressed air. That concept is not new, but what is interesting is the picture of the car in the video. Take a look.

“Runs on Air” is misleading
This hydraulic device will be able to save the kinetic energy of the car when slowing down is necessary, this kinetic energy will be able to be given back when wanted.
By the way, this is a close up system and Nitrogen instead of air will be used.
This car will be most efficient in stop and go traffic.
Actually, only 100% electric cars are able to save the kinetic energy through their battery.
This device will be cheaper than a battery, and will not suffer of capacity losses through time.

Bluelightning,

Thak you for those informations.

What are your taughts on safety ? I mean, a comoressed tank blowing up is really more like an explosion !

PSA Peugeot Citroën and Bosch developing hydraulic hybrid powertrain for passenger cars; 30% reduction in fuel consumption in NEDC, up to 45% urban; B-segment application in 2016, more information at

High pressure tanks are now made of carbon fiber and thermoplastic liner.
By exemple, if the pressure for standard use is 300b, they are tested at 450b, and rupture tested at pressures beyond 700b.
These tanks are not dangerous in the event of a crash because they are without the hidden trouble of burst fragment

This technology is already massively used in vehicles running on natural gas.

The first successful self-propelled torpedoes, used compressed air as its energy source.
