A couple of months ago, I saw a student at my University of Arizona workplace tooling around on one of these . . .

This is a step beyond a conventional multi-wheel electric skateboard and a big advance over the cheap side-by-side 2-wheeled "hoverboards" that seemed to be everywhere around Christmas of 2015. The kid I saw riding his (he told me that it actually belonged to his roommate) was freely moving from paved sidewalk to grassy hills. Here's a video with the inventor, Kyle Doerksen, describing it . . .

At around $1500, certainly not cheap. But the metal frame inspires some confidence that the build is robust. I like the fat tire as well. I now am seeing slightly lower cost competitors selling their take on this single-wheeled theme. But these seem to sport a considerably narrower tire that looks like solid rubber. I'm not sure how well they would do on rougher terrain.

It ought to be more terrain capable than the hoverboards. I don't trust mine on anything other than concrete or smooth, dry dirt. Traction is everything to these devices working. A wheel slips and the operator can easily fall.

It definitely is an interesting device, though.
