Re: Why Plug-In Vehicles are so Inexpensive

There are similar costs of wear and tear on ICE cars, too. The electric motor in any EV will last nearly a million miles, in all likelihood, but how far will an ICE go before requiring a rebuild? If you drive 25K miles a year, then you will easily save more than the total cost of the whole car; let ...

Re: Table of Range possible at Differing Speeds.

It would take at least 1kW of PV panels to run an i MiEV. They cannot all get sun at once, and you'd need to use the battery as a buffer. The SolarWorld GT solar car from Bochum University that is currently driving around the world has 800+ watts of panels, and it only carries 2 people, weighs just ...

Re: Why Plug-In Vehicles are so Inexpensive

EV cars will save over $17,000 on fuel and maintenance costs for every 100,000 miles driven. That is using today's* gasoline prices and regular maintenance costs at the dealer for a typical car sold in the USA -- that gets 22.5MPG. Maintenance is about 25% of that -- basic services every 5K, interme...

Re: iMiEV CdA?

I tried the AirTabs on my Scion xA and I found they hurt my efficiency a fair bit. I'm going by a couple of tanks, and I ended up removing them. I bought a bunch, and I still have a few unused, if anyone wants to try them. The boattail you posted is about the best one I've seen (over at EcoModder.co...

Re: Hypermiling the i-MiEV

Thanks for the welcome! He actually picked his "raspberry" 'i' up last night, and got to drive it to and from work today. http://images.dealer.com/evox/perspectives/8057/png/8057_36.png He's still feeling out the regen situation. He has a fair bit of time in driving his wife's Leaf, so I'm...

Re: Hypermiling the i-MiEV

Joe, I think your posts on regen and hypermiling are spot on, and I agree with you on almost all points. But I think that it is quite possible to improve the aerodynamics with modifications. Smooth wheel covers and rear wheel skirts and a Kamm back would be the first things I'd recommend. There is a...
