Re: 240V Charging and Extension cables (Amazing-E)

Your Amazing E should work on your 10-30P 3 prong dryer outlet because . . . . neutral is grounded, or it should be You can charge from any two 120 volt household outlets *if* the outlets are on different phases. Lots of people charge L2 using this method. Two standard 120 volt extension cords (must...

Re: 240V Charging and Extension cables (Amazing-E)

Ouch indeed! - What a mess! I went to the Amazing E website and read their literature - Not sure what I would call their product, but the word 'Amazing' wouldn't be included, for sure This is the first EVSE that I'm aware of that requires 4 wires to operate - I've never seen any others that come wit...

Re: 240V Charging and Extension cables (Amazing-E)

'Future proofing' your home / garage for an EV which might need a 40 or 50 amp EVSE one day down the road is certainly something to consider . . . . *IF* you think there's a likely hood of you ever buying a car like that while you're living there. In your case, what you're looking at (replacing your...

Re: 240V Charging and Extension cables (Amazing-E)

Without getting into a grounding discussion, just note that Neutral and Ground are tied together at your house power input panel. EVSEs typically do not use Neutral or Ground for carrying any current. Not only are they tied together, they are also tied to an 8 foot copper clad ground rod driven int...

Re: 240V Charging and Extension cables (Amazing-E)

Yes, the difference between charging with 12 amps and 16 is pretty minimal, since the car won't draw much more than 13. I've been charging at 12 for 6 years. Recently bought a 16 amp EVSE for my Volt and installed it much like you are thinking of doing My wife's ceramic kiln has it's own dedicated o...

Re: Used 2012 DCQC - Good Price?

Congrats! - Sounds like you got a great car at a good price

Actually, the compressor *is* very similar to the one in your fridge ;)

Ours are both pretty quiet though

Re: OEM EVSE Fault

Your car should still be under the full bumper to bumper warranty . . .. but going there with a problem like this may not get you much - Odds are that your EVSE will work just fine when you try to show the dealer your problem . . . . I personally doubt there's anything wrong with it. If you mention ...

Re: Brakes - 2012 same as 2014?

The rotors get surface rust every time I don't drive the car for 2 or 3 days - It wears off the first time you touch the brakes. I can't imagine that I'll need pads or rotors before 200,000 miles. I seldom touch the brake pedal until I'm down to 15 or 20 mph I sold a Toyota Supra once with 150,000 m...

Pretty Good Level 2 EVSE for Less Than $200

I bought one of these to use with our new Chevy Volt and I'm pretty impressed with it, so thought I'd share it with the group in case anyone is looking for a good L2 EVSE with adjustable current settings https://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-EV-Charger-EVSE-6-20-Plug-6-16A-240V-For-Electric-Vehicle-J177...

Re: OEM EVSE Fault

While there's nothing 'wrong' with using an extension cord to charge (especially not with a 10 gauge one) the extra NEMA 5-15 connections that adds are prone to giving intermittent connections, especially after repeated plugging and unplugging. A 5-15 is a pretty poor choice for any circuit drawing ...
